Meet our team

Dr Russell Grigg - Lead Veterinarian

MyVet Byron Bay - Vet - Dr Russell Grigg

Russ graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 1989. After a road trip around Australia to find "home" for his young family in 1997 he chose the Northern Rivers. Russ has worked in many of the local vet practices before finally settling in at MyVet Byron Bay in July 2012.

In 2002, Russ completed the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) training in Veterinary Acupuncture. Through his many years of small animal practice experience, Russ has developed excellent skills in all aspects of veterinary medicine and surgery. He is particularly passionate about advocating for excellent dental health in all of his toothed patients, young and old, and understands that a healthy mouth is a vital ingredient for pets to live a happy, pain free and healthy life. Russ is an avid sailor (LOVES his twice yearly sailing trips!) and enjoys anything ‘ocean’ really.

Dr Susie Wood - Veterinarian

Susie graduated from the University of Glasgow, in her native country of Scotland, in 2003. Since then she has volunteered in Thailand, worked in Melbourne, Sydney, Scotland, and the Byron and Ballina shires.

Susie has a keen interest in surgery and specialises in Animal Behaviour. She is an accredited AQIS Veterinarian and, as such, is qualified to carry out the examinations, treatments and paperwork required for transporting pets overseas. Her wide range of experience stems from not only treating but also owning many different types of animals over the years.

Susie has two small children, a cat and a husband (in order of importance, of course! HA!)  She also likes to bust a move on the dance floor, whether it be Bollywood dancing or the local 80’s disco. If you’re around Byron Bay, you might be lucky enough to be entertained by her.

Susie has been working part-time at MyVet Byron Bay since 2013.

Bec Harper – Practice Manager

MyVet Byron Bay - Practice Manager- Bec Harper

Bec is orginally from New Zealand, where she grew up on a dairy farm. She has worked as a Veterinary Nurse for 8 years and has completed a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, as well as a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing/ Practice Management.

Bec has a dog called Alfie and a cat called Bootsy, plus her two troublesome chickens who spend most of their time pulling apart the gardens! Bec recently returned from maternity leave after the birth of her little girl, Nina.

Bec is the Practice Manager at MyVet Byron Bay and has been with us since 2012.

Layna Hansen – Veterinary Nurse

MyVet Byron Bay - Veterinary Nurse - Layne Hansen

Layna was born in Byron Bay. She travelled a lot growing up and spent 3 years living in the United States and a similar amount of time living in Fiji. Upon returning to Australia with her family, Layna lived in Melbourne before returning to live in the Byron Shire 20 years ago. She’s happy to have made it back to the bay to settle with her family!

Layna has a little boy who is 3 years old and a furry son too, her cat, Mr Paws. She enjoys horse riding, circus arts, aikido (martial arts) and camping. She doesn’t get as much time as she’d like to fit all of these activities in these days though!

Layna is our longest standing staff member. She’s been a Veterinary Nurse at the clinic for almost 10 years and recently covered the Practice Manager role while Bec was on maternity leave.

Kylie – Vet Nurse

MyVet Byron Bay - Veterinary Nurse - Kylie

Kylie is originally a Byron Shire local.  She moved to Sydney for a few years to work in the banking sector. She returned to the Northern Rivers around 2010 and worked as a track work rider for a local racehorse trainer for 3 years.  In 2013, Kylie started at MyVet Byron Bay as a veterinary nurse where she completed her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing training.

Kylie loves living on her property in the Byron Hinterland with her kelpie - Maddog, her orange cat - Albie, her orange horse Tickles and ‘the ladies’ aka the chickens.  Kylie continues to do track work with racehorses and works part-time at MyVet Byron Bay.  We all love her brightness and dedication to the task of Veterinary nursing.

Amy – Veterinary Nurse

MyVet Byron Bay - Veterinary Nurse - Amy

Amy started out at MyVet Byron Bay in 2015 as a work placement student, whilst studying her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. When she graduated, she stayed on as a volunteer and then was offered to work as one of our casual nurses. Whether it's chatting to clients, assisting in surgery, or those days of getting covered in poop, Amy loves her work here and the diversity that every day brings. When not at our clinic, Amy also works at a wildlife hospital and spends most of her spare time surfing.

Amy has two rescue dogs, Billy and Owen, who have taught her that even being a veterinary nurse, your dogs still chew your shoes, take themselves on naughty adventures and eat your pot plants!
